Imagine talking with your friends about who is the best professional athlete. Now, imagine talking to them and not saying anything about numbers or statistics. What a boring conversation that would be! Without numbers, we could not evaluate the performances of individuals and teams. For example, every football game is full of numbers used to compare the players and the teams. What team scored the most points? Who ran for the most yards? Who has the most touchdowns? What is a player’s passing average? As the volume of numbers used to describe sports increased, we developed tools to measure, calculate, and store them. Stop watches measure the speed of runners in the 40 yard dash. Cameras film the form of a quarterback’s throw. Computers compile, calculate, and store numbers for later evaluation.
